Beginner Knitting Tip

I’ve learned a lot the past three weeks while I’ve been teaching myself to knit properly. I didn’t watch any tip videos or anything. Instead I just kept knitting until I figured it out myself and how to make it look nice.

My aunt told me when I first started to crochet that the tension of the yarn while your crocheting is very important and to not pull the yarn tightly. That was so beneficial with crochet. You really need to hold the yarn loosely for your project to turn out nice.

With knitting it’s a different story. I kept trying to hold the yarn loosely and make sure my knit project was loose but it didn’t look right.. this past week I figured out my problem.

When you knit you want to hold the yarn tightly and knit tightly. It won’t turn out tight feeling. It’ll still be stretchy but the stitches will look right. Knit stitches are suppose to look tightly together. When you don’t pull any knit stitch tightly then there are weird gaps that aren’t suppose to be there and it doesn’t really look like true knit.

My latest project is a cardigan and I added a photo of the knit to this post. I have learned to really love knitting because once I figured this little detail out, I was able to make whatever I wanted. Hopefully my experience will help you with yours if you’re a beginner too!

With care,

Alyssa

  1. Your yarn looks terrific! I still haven’t knit a cardigan and I’ve been knitting 5 years. Congrats to you. I hope you love knitting as much as I do.
